Case Title

Activities of PFI – Prof. Hand chopping case

As per Government of India, Ministry of Home Affairs order No. I-11011/62/2010-IS-IV dated 09/03/2011 National Investigation Agency took over the investigation of FIR No. 704/2010 dated 04/07/2010 of Muvattupuzha Police Station, Ernakulum district and re-registered the case on 04/04/2011 at NIA Police Station, New Delhi as RC- 01/2011/NIA/DLI under sections 143, 147, 148, 120 (B), 341, 427, 323, 324, 326, 506 (ii), 201, 202, 212, 153(A), 307 r/w 149 of IPC, sections 15 r/w 16, 18, 18(B),19 & 20 of UA(P) Act and section 3 of Explosive Substances Act.

Summary of Allegations

On 04.07.2010 at 8 am, seven persons armed with deadly weapons and explosive materials, attacked Professor T. J. Joseph chopped off his right palm with an axe and tried to commit murder of the said Professor. During investigation, the roles of 54 accused persons including the seven assailants have surfaced in this case.

Present Status

Charge sheet was filed on 10.01.2011 by State Police against 27 accused persons before the Hon’ble Additional District & Sessions Court-I, Ernakulam. First Supplementary charge sheet was filed by NIA before the Hon’ble NIA Special Court, Ernakulam against 09 accused persons on 18.01.2013 and second supplementary charge against 01 accused person on 12.04.2013. Trial against 31 accused persons has been completed. On 30/04/2015 the Hon’ble NIA Special Court, Ernakulam, Kerala pronounced judgment in this case convicting 13 accused persons while 18 accused persons were acquitted. Case against 6 accused persons who have already been charge sheeted is pending before the Hon’ble court for trial and out of the 6 accused persons 3 are still absconding.

Further investigation against the remaining 17 accused persons is in progress.
